BioTHE MESSAGE :.
Any action commited without purpose is wasted. Along these lines, we as a band are dedicated to
manifest purpose by infusing our existance with a meaning. This meaning, is a reflection of a
message of socio-political liberation, spiritual enlightenment and personal growth.

Cipher was formed in 1996 by long time friends who wanted to bring something new and innovative to underground music. As the group developed artistically and politically they reasoned that art can and should have a serious social mission. That mission, coupled with the band's unique blend of diverse musical conventions, create Cipher's signature sound and dynamic presence. Brutal hardcore breakdowns are intercut with melodcism and politically charged lyrics to form a provocative, probing treatment of race, gender, and class.
The band has released several projects throughout its years and continues to push the boundaries of musical and political orthodoxy. Prior releases include the LP "Recognize" (1997), the EP "Protoculture" (1999), and the 6inch record "Burnt Halos" (2001). Cipher's last offering, "Antidote" (2001) gained critical acclaim as an unrelenting, neo-revolutionary musical statement.
After a series of both regional and national tours-- including their most recent tour supporting "Antidote"-- Cipher went into a hiatus in order to focus much of its energies on writing new material for its first full-length release on Uprising Records, the much anticipated concept album, “Children of Gods Fire”. Cipher has most recently resumed live performances and plans to play frequently in preparation of the release.
Cipher's goal is to bring an end to oppression. Whether the fight is against white supremacy, overthrowing gender oppression, towards Afrikan liberation, smashing neocolonialism, halting neo-liberalism, snuffing homophobia, ending capitalist excesses, for animal liberation, or on behalf of nature, we recognize the universality and interconnectedness of struggle.
We will accomplish this goal through varied strategies and by any means necessary.
